Victoria shine in day two at Aus Champs
Victoria were the big winners of Day Two at the Under-20 & Ivor Burge Championships in Canberra as they went undefeated across all divisions, winning all 9 of their Thursday matches. Both the U20 women had big wins with Victoria A comfortably beating Western Australia 82-54 while the other Victorian women’s team beat Queensland 86-59. Victorian’s Ivor Burge men’s team went 2 from 2 while the U20 Victorian men’s side had comfortable victories over Tasmania (89-74) and South Australia (86-61).

The day began with a trio of Ivor Burge matches that were heavily one sided; Victoria breezed past South Australia B in the men’s competition 140-14 while Japan continued their dominant start with a 122-58 win over ACT, however their undefeated streak ended as they were beaten in a high-scoring affair against Victoria 114-97, where Jake De La Motte dominated the game finishing with 58 points. It wasn’t until the New South Wales men’s team went up against Western Australia where we saw a highly contested affair until WA pulled away to a 97-72 win off the back of a terrific game from their captain Kenneth Opoku, recording 32 points and 30 rebounds. On the women’s side of the Ivor Burge tournament Western Australia had a comfortable win over South Australia 122-58 before going down to NSW in the evening 88-48.
In the Under-20’s field, NBA Global Academy continued their undefeated streak with two more wins against ACT in the morning 107-54 and Tasmania in the evening 92-60. Dyson Daniels is making his talents known as a 16 year old putting up a 17-point 12-assist double-double. Queensland finished the day on a positive note with their U20 Women’s side taking care of Western Australia in a 69-43 win.
The day’s most impressive stat-line came from the Ivor Burge men’s competition where ACT’s James Doyle dominated in their match against South Australia B, recording a triple double with 25 points, 27 rebounds and 10 blocks. To top it off for James, his team ran away with a huge 102-59 victory over South Australia’s Ivor Burge men’s B team.
The match of the day came from court 5 where Queensland and New South Wales went down to the wire until a 3-pointer by Ryan Abbott tied the game at 72-72. With time running down the cool-headed Archie Woodhill stepped up to the free throw line to sink both shots, putting the game out of reach for Queensland and giving the blues their first win of the tournament. Captain Biwali Bayles starred with 27 points and 8 assists, with the game finishing up NSW 75-72 QLD.
