Neil has been recognised for his outstanding service he has provided to the sport, as a player, coach, referee and administrator spanning some sixty-five years of involvement.
It is really in the area of officiating coaching and officiating administration that Neil has left his indelible mark. Many of Victoria’s refereeing community would have been guided and assisted in their development directly or indirectly by Neil at some stage of their careers, such was his impact on our game.
Neil Bradbury started his basketball life in 1954 where he played Victorian Junior Championships with Melbourne, before playing A Grade basketball with Business Houses until 1968.
In 1960, Neil became a referee and would officiate until 2001, with his resume including appointments to NBL, WNBL and SEABL panels. In 1982 he was appointed to the SEABL Men’s semi-final, the 1985 WNBL Grand Final and 1988 Women’s Conference Final. He was also appointed to games at various National Championships in addition to the Senior and Junior Victorian Championships.
Throughout his time in the game, Neil also served on a number of referee committees, both Victorian and Australian, as well as serving as both president and vice president of the Victorian Basketball Referees Association (now Technical Officials Commission). He also served as an Executive Member and former Vice President of the Victorian Basketball Association (now Basketball Victoria).
Neil was also a well-respected coach and was an Assistant Coach for the Victoria Metropolitan Men’s Under 18 team that won four consecutive national gold medals.
Neil’s work also extended to the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) as he worked as a coordinator for 13 years.
Neil will be remembered as a life member of Basketball Victoria, the Victorian Basketball Referees Association (now Technical Officials Commission), Nunawading VBRA branch and the Melbourne East Basketball Association. The TOC also named an award after Neil, to acknowledge the exceptional efforts of the Referee Advisor of the Year.
Basketball Victoria would like to extend its sympathies and condolences to Neil’s family and friends during this time.
Basketball Victoria and the Technical Officials Commission would like to extend its deepest condolences to the friends and family of Life Member – Neil Bradbury, who sadly passed away over the weekend.
