VALE – Col Darrington

Col was an intricate part of Victorian Country Basketball and performed many roles across a variety of programs including; Head Coach of the Basketball Victoria Country Regional Academy, Head Network Coach within the ITC/NITP Elite Athlete Development Programs,  Victorian State Coach as well as Coach of Victorian Country Teams at the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup and the Pacific Coast Slam.

Col started his basketball in Horsham before moving to Geelong, during this time he coached many junior teams in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) and at the Victorian Country Championships.

He was part of the 1996 silver medal winning Under 16 Victorian Country Boys team at the National Championships in Sydney, the coaching group included his good friend, Owen Hughan.

Col also won a silver medal with the Under 16 Girls as head coach of the Victorian Country Team at the 1999 National Championships in Devonport, Tasmania.  Coaching with Jacqui Henry and Rob Jeffrey, plus team manager, Karla Coulson, they lost their first two games of that championship before storming home to take Victorian Metro out in the semi-final, eventually going down in the final to a South Australian Metro team, led by a young Erin Phillips.

Victorian Country Commission Chair, Bill Jeffs, was a good friend of Col’s and passed on his condolences to the Darrington family.

I am pleased to say that Col was a good friend over many years. We did not see each other often but had many happy memories of our times together. We shared several successful State Team campaigns as well as many camps, events and tournaments over the years.

He was a great coach and always cared for his players welfare. Col was soft off the court but he had a hardness when the ball was thrown up. I regard him as a wonderful mentor who taught me so much about the game and about coaching in general.

Col was a unique and passionate man, full of life in all its complexities, loyal, a joker and a great man to have as a friend. I always admired his love of family and his determination to overcome adversity. I will miss him greatly”

Col – from all within the Victorian Basketball family, thank you for everything you have done for Basketball in country Victoria and your work in developing athletes and coaches.  RIP
