The Australian Spinners U23 Junior Men travel to the Kitakyushu Cup Tournament in Japan
The Australian Spinners U23 Junior Men wheelchair basketball travel party has been selected to take part in the Kitakyushu Cup Tournament in Japan from 21 – 24 November.
Spinners Head Coach Brad Ness selected 12 athletes to head to Fukuoka, Japan from the recent Shellharbour training camp and tournament, with a watchful eye also on their daily training environments and reporting.
The Aussie juniors flew to Japan yesterday to compete in a 4-nation tournament, including hosts Japan, Germany and Canada.
Australian teams have a long and successful history attending the Kitakyushu Cup tournament, with the Rollers men’s group taking part on several occasions when targeted for the senior teams.
Japan have a proud history of running elite level tournaments and this 2019 event will be no different.
It is great opportunity for the Spinners young squad to get use to travelling internationally as a group, while having to compete at a high level.
Coach Brad Ness said he is looking forward to the challenges his young charges will experience.
“The Spinners are looking forward to touching down in Japan to participate in the Kitakyushu Cup and we are honoured to have been invited to play against some of the best U/23 teams in the world at a tournament rich in history,” Ness said.
“Our players, although young, have been preparing all year with the final 12 players narrowed down from a squad of 22, after a very successful and competitive camp in Wollongong last month.
“Our young Spinners will not only be playing to win, but will learn from the valuable experience of participating in the Kitakyushu Cup.
“The Spinners will be led by point guard Lachlin Dalton, Forward Thomas McHugh and guard Frank Pinder who have all had break out seasons this year.
“The Spinners and Basketball Australia would like to thank the local Kitakyushu organising committee and the Japan Basketball Federation for once again inviting an Australian team to play in their tournament.”
