Seven Victorians named in Boomers FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers Squad

Victorian natives Mitch Creek, David Barlow and Nathan Sobey will lead the 24-player squad alongside Chris Goulding and Cameron Glidden, all who were part of the Boomers team that finished fourth at the FIBA World Cup in September 2019.

A squad debut for Josh Giddey comes following an explosive year in 2019, which saw the 17-year old point guard take his talents to the NBA Global Academy.

After working his way up the ranks of Victorian basketball, Giddey guided the U18 VIC Metro Men’s team to the title at the 2019 national championships and was a standout player at NBA Academy games.

Giddey will get to develop his abilities with the 2020 FIBA squad beside other Victorian players Dane Pineau, Kyle Adnam and Anthony Drmic, each bringing their own experience from the NBL.

With Boomers Head Coach Brett Brown unavailable due to NBA commitments, Will Weaver will take on the role of head coach with Adam Caporn and CJ Bruton as his assistants.

Weaver, head coach of the Sydney Kings, and Caporn, head coach of Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence, coached Australia’s 2017 Asia Cup squad to gold and 2019 World Cup to fourth.

Brisbane Bullets assistant coach, CJ Bruton, also worked alongside Caporn at the 2018 Commonwealth Games where the Boomers won gold.

“We’re fortunate to have so many talented players eager to step up whenever they have the chance to represent Australia,” Weaver said.

“It’s always a tremendous honour to be part of the Boomers program and we are excited for this group to start the journey of qualifying for the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup on home soil against New Zealand in Brisbane.”

The final team for the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifier will be announced ahead of the first game.

The team will play at home in the opening game against New Zealand on February 20 at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena. The Boomers will then be hosted by Hong Kong on February 23.
