Open Letter to Women and Girls of the Basketball Community

Women’s Health Week was founded by the Jean Hailes organisation in 2013 and is an annual health awareness campaign to highlight the importance of maintaining good health and wellbeing and preventing future health problems for women and girls in Australia.

It is an organisation I have had a strong connection with over many years and in this challenging year its timely to step back during this health week and take stock of everything 2020 continues to deliver.

Since January, members of our community have endured a catastrophic bushfire season, heart-breaking droughts, devastating floods, and now we are dealing with the prolonged trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, many have relived and or continue to experience racism, discrimination and injustice, as the black lives matter movement has highlighted the need for immediate action when addressing the lack of racial equality both in Australia and abroad.

But against the backdrop of such anguish and hardship, never has the Australian Spirit shone so bright, with our communities rallying around each other with such camaraderie, compassion and support.

The resilience shown in the face of adversity is the cornerstone of the Australian community.

With these challenges impacting our lives and those around us, now it is more important than ever to prioritise good health and wellbeing.

I will be one of the many women in our basketball family who will use this week to reset my goals for good health and wellbeing leading up to the end of the year. Over the course of the next five days, I’m calling upon women and girls within our Australian basketball community to reflect upon their own health and wellbeing – emotional, mental and physical – to assist in the prevention of future health issues.
