LIBERALS ANNOUNCE $10M TOWARDS INDOOR SPORTS CENTRE IN HOBART

A re-elected majority Hodgman Liberal Government will invest $10 million for design, planning and construction of the new multi-sport facility for major sports of basketball, netball and gymnastics.

Chris McCoy, Basketball Tasmania CEO, stated “The announcement is exciting for basketball and we thank the government for their support.

“The new facility will provide a home for basketball in the south and will also become the headquarters for the Hobart Chargers and Basketball Tasmania”.

Anthony Moore, Basketball Australia CEO, was in the state recently and announced the prospect of hosting international games and Australian Junior Championships in Hobart.

“The new facility will allow us to start planning for these events in 2020 and 2021,” he said.

“Basketball is certainly on an upward trajectory at present at both a national and state level – as evidenced by our recent rise in registration figures – up 36% from the previous 12 months.”

A re-elected majority Hodgman Liberal Government will also commit to continuing Basketball Tasmania’s $250,000 funding to deliver school clinics across the state in partnership with SEABL clubs.

This funding has proved to be an ideal investment in exposing the game which will drive participation increases.

A new, next-generation, indoor multi-sports facility will be built in Glenorchy to meet the growing demand and encourage even more Tasmanians to play sport.
