Hoop Time surges in popularity for seventh straight year

2017 continued our record-breaking streak as Hoop Time round robin days this year exceeded our previous records for the seventh year in a row.

47,763 players took part in Victoria’s school program to smash our old record and prove the growth and popularity of basketball remains as high as ever. With an array of large Hoop Time days across the state – including Dandenong (eight courts), Casey (eight courts), Pakenham (eight courts) and MSAC (eight courts) throughout the year.

The addition of new School Sports Victoria (SSV) districts participating in Hoop Time as they choose to add a junior (grade 3/4) day to their schedules and we’ve also taken the program to our most remote areas yet. Hoop Time Mallacoota was a raging success and has helped contribute to the extraordinary increase in participation – as Hoop Time grew by 2142 participants, 41 schools, 238 teams from 2016.

That added demand for our popular school-age program has led to an additional 12 District Days and six days across the state as a whole, as kids, parents, teachers and schools flock to the program year-in, year-out.

Basketball’s popularity in Victoria has been driven by programs like Hoop Time over recent years, as a staggering 15,822 additional participants have chosen to play in this program alone from 2010 to present.

Basketball Victoria School Programs Coordinator Chris Angus said it was an incredible year for Hoop Time.

“To break our record again and surpass 47,500 participants just highlights how much schools in Victoria love the program,” Angus said. “It is always about giving kids of all abilities a go and playing our great sport. We have achieved this and more in 2017.”

“It is a great team effort between the venues, Hoop Time coordinators, school teachers & parents to bring it all together for each round robin day and make it a success. It is so great to see how much the kids enjoy each day and I love hearing how often it is the highlight of the year for many students within schools. Such is the excitement Hoop Time can bring into school communities.”

This year’s Hoop Time was also the last for our hard-working Schools Programs Coordinator Chris Angus, who has accepted an exciting new role with the Southern Districts Basketball Association in Brisbane. We want to thank Chris for his exceptional work over the last seven and a half years in driving Hoop Time to amazing new heights.
