GET TO KNOW THE BOOMERS AND OPALS COMMONWEALTH GAMES TEAMS

AUSTRALIAN BOOMERS

Six NBL clubs are represented by the Boomers Commonwealth Games team with only Cam Gliddon’s recent departure from the Cairns Taipans keeping every Australian club from being featured. Chris Goulding and Nathan Sobey will put aside hostilities following the NBL Grand Final series which saw Melbourne United beat the Adelaide 36ers last weekend with Goulding earning the Larry Sengstock medal.

Indicating the strength of the NBL not just as a premier league in the world but as a source of development, five NBL Rookies of the Year (Brad Newley, Jesse Wagstaff, Gliddon, Nick Kay and Angus Brandt) are included in the team.

Goulding is one of two members from Australia’s Rio Olympic team alongside Damian Martin while seven players helped the Boomers advance through the FIBA Asia Cup undefeated last year to claim the gold medal.

Brad Newley was one of those players and he is the only Boomer back in the line-up after he won the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medal in Melbourne.

Every player has also been a part of Australia’s FIBA World Cup qualifiers which they are currently in the middle of, having already advanced to the second round later this year with two games still to come in the first round through June and July.

Ezi Magbegor and Nicole Seekamp will make their debuts for the Opals and both players are coming off stunning WNBL seasons with Magbegor earning the Betty Watson Rookie of the Year award.

Four Olympians from the 2016 Rio Games are back for the Opals while Liz Cambage, Jenna O’Hea and Belinda Snell are Olympic medalists from 2004-2012 while Snell was also a part of the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold-medal winning team in Melbourne.
