Ezi Magbegor and Jazmin Shelley from Victoria as well as Abby Cubillo (Northern Territory), Sam Simons (South Australia) and Emma Clarke (Western Australia) have completed their scholarships, taking with them success at both national and international level.
Magbegor, Shelley, Cubillo and Simons were a part of the Under-17 Australian Sapphires team that won gold at the 2016 World Cup with Magbegor also earning the tournament MVP while Clarke starred at the Under-17 Women’s Oceania Championship this year with 18 points, seven rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.
‘We are excited about the graduation of these outstanding individuals”, said Centre of Excellence Women’s Program Head Coach, Kristen Veal.
“Each of these athletes has genuinely invested in their own development during their time at the CoE and we believe the growth they have achieved both as athletes and young people has readied them for what promises to be an exciting next chapter in their basketball careers.
‘During the course of their CoE scholarships, each of these young women has earned national junior team selection and proudly represented Australia with great success on the world stage.
“With this international representative experience, we believe these athletes are well on their way to achieving great things in their basketball futures, including hopefully realising their ultimate goal of becoming an Opal.
‘The achievement of these athletes is only made possible through the close cooperation and support of family, friends, junior associations, state and high performance programs.
“Each of these have played an integral role in shaping these young athletes and facilitating their development over many years. We wish all the graduates success in their endeavours and look forward to following their progress in the years to come.”
