Country 2020-2021 schedule announced

With the return to community sport set to occur across Victorian basketball in upcoming weeks, we can now confirm the rescheduling or cancellation of the following events and tournaments as part of the Basketball Victoria Country 2020-2021 schedule.

While the focus is on a return to domestic basketball,  there has been a consistent theme of encouragement and support regarding the resumption of ongoing programs and events that we host, in line with COVID-19 restrictions and safety guidelines set out by the Victorian Government.

Please note these dates are subject to change due to the ongoing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and any related Victorian Government restrictions.

Junior Country Championships
The 2020 Country Championships – Under-16/Under-18 Division 3 and 4, Under-14 and Under-12 have been cancelled.

Junior Domestic Championships
The 2020 Junior Domestic Championships have been cancelled. Basketball Victoria Country Development Officers will work with associations on an alternate celebration of basketball weekend if possible.

Country Basketball League
With the season not due to commence until October 2020, we believe there is sufficient time  for the season to commence as usual. Further information about nominations and fixtures will be announced shortly.

Under 14 Regional Qualifiers
The 2020 Under-14 Regional Qualifiers, typically conducted in November annually across four Regions, is set to go ahead as scheduled.  The event will be held either 21 November or 28 November (to be determined).

Under 14 Skills Days
The Under 14 Skills Days will be rescheduled to 8-9 August 2020 across the previously announced nine regional centres. Our aim is to deliver them from those nine centres, but if restrictions require less numbers in each centre to maintain proper hygiene and social distancing, then provisions can be made to extend this up to 18 centres.

Under 14 Regional Academy
The Regional Academy, usually conducted between April and September annually, will now be held from 10 August to 1 November, with this 12-week program including the September School Holidays.

It is expected that each athlete completes at least 10 hours of the re-developed program. Each Academy will conduct one single day camp to conclude the 2020  Regional Academy, this  will become the selection camp for the next Country pathway.

Under 14 Gold Nugget Camp
The Gold Nugget Camp will be rescheduled to 7-8 November 2020 to take into account the availability of facilities.

Under 12 Skills Days and Jamboree
The U12 Skills Days will be conducted on 12-13 September 2020 at the previously announced nine regional centres. Our aim is to deliver them from those nine centres, but if restrictions require less numbers in each centre to maintain proper hygiene and social distancing, then provisions can be made to extend this up to 18 centres.

Provisions around the Jamboree need to be finalised, we are aiming to be run the event across the Melbourne Cup Weekend of 31 October – 3 November. If restrictions require a shorter Jamboree, this may be reduced to 31 October – 1 November. We will be in close communication with athletes’ parents, associations and administrators regarding any further changes to these proposed dates.

The following Referee Development Projects have been cancelled for 2020: Women With a Whistle, Referee Coach Course at Under-14 Country Championships.

With the Jamboree set to go ahead, this will give 18 young referees the opportunity to start in the pathway. Selection of attending referees will be overseen by Referee Development Officer Karin Berrysmith.
