AUSSIE MEN SPLIT DAY 1 RESULTS OF 2019 FIBA 3X3 WORLD CUP

In their first ever game at the FIBA 3×3 World Cup, the Australian men took on Brazil and found themselves trailing 1-3 early.

Utilising Greg Hire down low, Australia were able to respond and then Tom Wright got a put-back off a missed free-throw before nailing a corner two.

Tim Coenraad followed with a two of his own to cap an 8-1 run for Australia and Wright remained aggressive with a pretty step-back two to keep the scoreboard pressure on Brazil.

That gave the Aussies a 14-7 lead midway through the contest and while Brazil connected on a couple of late two’s themselves, the game was beyond their reach.

Coenraad then finished things off from the free-throw line, claiming a 21-15 victory to mark their debut a success.

The Aussies backed up a couple of hours later against Poland and Hire hit the first two shots for his side before second chance opportunities for Coenraad and Andrew Steel gave Australia a 7-4 lead.

Offensive rebounds continued to be an issue for Poland as Australia crashed the glass as a collective and with another two-pointer, Wright had the Aussies on track for a sweep of Day 1.

However, with three minutes to go, Hire suffered a knock to the head which required bandaging and with him off the court, Australia had to play without a sub.

Hire was only gone for a minute of game time but it gave Poland a chance and they took that opportunity with both hands, scoring five straight points to move in front 15-14.

Australia still had a number of good looks in the dying seconds from inside and outside but could not get anything to drop as they fell 14-16.

With five teams in each pool but only the top two advancing to the Quarter-Finals, there is little room for error as the Aussie men prepare for their next games late on Thursday night against Latvia and Japan.

The women begin their tournament tonight against Andorra and Switzerland as they aim to continue their 12-game winning streak which they are carrying over from their recent tour of China.

All games will be live-streamed via the FIBA 3×3 YouTube channel while stats are available via the official tournament website and you can watch a replay of Australia’s two games from Day 1 below.
