The games followed Media Day for the athletes and preceded this morning which will see the Ivor Burge Championships also get underway.

For the Under-20 women, home team ACT got off to the perfect start with a four-point win over Queensland. They survived a 20-32 final term onslaught from Queensland, having set up the victory with a 44-30 first half.

Sharna Thompson was devastating, scoring 28 points in 25 minutes off the bench while Zoe Ramshaw (15 points on 7-9 shooting) and Isabelle Bourne (13 points, 15 rebounds) proved too strong for Adelaide Fuller (22 points) and Grace Champion (16 points).

A nasty ankle injury for Alex Fowler may have also spelled the end of the WNBL player’s tournament very early in a further blow to Queensland.

Meanwhile, Western Australia got on the winners list as Suzi-Rose Deegan (21 points, 11 boards) had six points in the fourth quarter and Tayah Burrows and Samantha Ashby combined for ten points to help overcome Victoria A 69-68.

For the Under-20 men, both Victorian sides got off to hot starts with Victoria A beating Queensland 88-79 despite Callum Dalton’s 36 points, ten rebounds and four blocks.

New South Wales had six players reach double-figures in a big victory over Northern Territory while Western Australia ran away with a 20-point win over ACT with a 21-8 fourth quarter courtesy of Luke Travers (22 points) and Kyle Bowen (19 points, 11 rebounds, five assists).

Day 2 begins at 8am today with New South Wales and ACT getting the Ivor Burge women underway while the Ivor Burge men’s competition starts at 10am with ACT hosting Tasmania.
