The Kevin Coombs Cup got underway today while the Under-18’s are entering the business end of the tournament with Quarter-Finals beginning tomorrow.
Aiming to improve on their silver medal finish from last year, WA have set the tone in the Kevin Coombs Cup with two wins on Day 5, led by national players Andrew Dewberry (18.5 points per game) and Thomas McHugh (15 points).
QLD South also got off to a hot start, defeating the QLD/SA composite side and NSW in a tight contest.
NSW jumped out to a seven-point lead at quarter-time but QLD South quickly reeled in the deficit with a 19-5 second term as Eithan Leard finished with 23 points, nine rebounds, four assists and five steals in the 63-54 victory.
That second victory helped give them some early separation on the ladder ahead of NSW and Victoria who sit third and fourth respectively on 1-1.
For the Under-18 men, Vic Metro have cruised into the Quarter-Finals from Pool A with a 5-0 record but Tas (4-1) also impressed, finishing off the group stage yesterday with a win over QLD North.
They will now take on NSW Country and Vic Country today as the tournament switches to a knock-out format with no room left for error for any side.
NSW Metro and QLD North are the other two Quarter-Finalists from Pool A but they will have their work cut out for them against SA Metro and QLD South, who, alongside Vic Country, finished with 5-1 records in Pool B.
SA Metro look to have their best chance at a medal in recent years, having finished tenth in 2018 and 2017 while finishing fourth in 2016.
Vic Metro also finished the Under-18 women’s group stage undefeated to match their male counterparts and the state is well placed for an all-Victorian final as Vic Country enter the Quarter-Finals unbeaten as well.
QLD North and SA Metro owned 4-1 records, NSW Metro and QLD South finished on 3-2 and WA Country and NSW Country are at 2-3 in what is shaping up to be a very even competition.
