2019 U18 CHAMPS AND KEVIN COOMBS CUP TO PROVIDE BOOST TO TOWNSVILLE COMMUNITY

Townsville Stadium and Townsville Basketball Centre have suffered minimal damage and will be unaffected by April while accommodation and food outlets will also be capable of hosting the influx of visitors to the area.

“Last time we hosted this event, we estimated an injection of $3,531,000 into the Townsville North Queensland economy, generated by the inclusion of over 1,500 event attendees,” said Townsville Enterprise CEO Patricia O’Callaghan.

“This year will be a fantastic opportunity for Townsville to again showcase itself as the sporting and events capital of Northern Australia.

“The tournament provides us the opportunity to demonstrate our outstanding basketball facilities as well as our extensive dining, shopping and tourism experiences while providing a much needed boost to the local economy.”

Basketball Australia Acting CEO Paul Maley is thrilled to be bringing the Under-18 Championships and Kevin Coombs Cup back to Townsville.

“Following a successful 2017 tournament and their continued support of basketball including the WNBL’s JCU Townsville Fire, we are very excited to once again have Townsville host this year’s event.

“The tournament is well-timed and will be a perfect opportunity to provide a boost to the city’s economy and community,” said Maley.

“While the effects of the weather event that hit North Queensland are still lingering, it has also brought our community closer together,’ said Townsville Basketball General Manager, Callam Betts.

“Townsville Basketball has had plenty of hands on deck to continue preparations for the Under 18 Nationals and are very excited to present what will be a fantastic experience for those involved.

“With the support of Townsville City Council, Townsville Enterprise and the Townsville community as a whole, we are looking forward to hosting what is historically a marvellous event and sharing the experience with all involved in the beautiful city of Townsville.”
