NSW advance to U20 Men’s Semi after an epic overtime clash

Finals drama headlined the action on Friday at the Australian Institute of Sport for the third day of of the U20’s & Ivor Burge championships for 2020.

The final game of the day saw an epic Quarter Final clash with NSW U20 men going down to the wire against a hungry South Australia. SA held a comfortable lead throughout the game but the fourth quarter saw a relentless fightback from the blues led by their point guard Biwali Bayles who rallied his team to give them not only a fighting chance but opening the door to a NSW victory. As the clock ticked down, Bayles stepped up again and hit a 3-pointer that teased the crowd as it bounced around the ring until it dropped through the net, tying the game at 76 a-piece and sending it into overtime. New South Wales and Bayles in particular took over the extra time and overran South Australia to take a 92-80 victory, with Biwali finishing with 30 points from 45 minutes of game time.

After completing their final pool games in the morning, Victoria cruised through their Quarter Final, taking the win against Western Australia 101-57, while Tasmania secured a massive win against Victoria A to also progress through to the semi finals. The game was dominated by Tasmania’s guards, with Taran Armstrong scoring 37 points and Reyne Smith dropping seven 3’s in a 92-90 victory over a team-oriented Victoria A team. Queensland’s men had another impressive win, this time against ACT where 5 players scored in double digits led by Tamuri Wigness’ 21 points to take a 94-63 win.

The Ivor Burge women opened the days action as they completed their pool matches before finals tomorrow, with Victoria dominating once again to secure another gold medal match. They were pushed right to the end against New South Wales in their first game but were still able to clinch the win 59-57, however after a few hours break they were able to return to their dominating ways as they took care of Western Australia 112-41. With 3 players scoring over 20 points Victoria are now looking towards Sunday as the first team to qualify in a gold medal match. New South Wales were able to turn it around in the afternoon as they beat South Australia 76-24 and will now face ACT in the first qualifying match.

On the men’s side of the Ivor Burge competition, quarter finals were underway to decide the matchups for our semis tomorrow. Victoria and Japan cruised through their quarters, while South Australia A were put up against their state counterparts, South Australia B, in order to secure their semi finals position, winning comfortably 123-15. The final position in the semi finals was decided between Tasmania and ACT which lived up to expectations as both teams gave it their all, however it was the dominant James Doyle for ACT recording another 24 points and 35 rebounds to help them get over the top of Tasmania 85-73.

The U20 women’s pool games continued right throughout the day with some familiar faces taking some big wins. Victoria and Queensland both won 2 games throughout the day, with the Victorians having complete control against South Australia (78-54) and Victoria A (79-47) to close the day still undefeated. For the reds, Tasmania was no match for them as they took the win 77-54 however in the final match for the women, New South Wales really took it to Queensland with manic defence and high intensity however they were unable to come away with the win, with Queensland walking away with 2nd place on the ladder following a 70-67 win.
