Liz Cambage stars in WNBA record performance

Victorian star Liz Cambage notched a pair of incredible achievements to cap off Tuesday 17 July in style.

Cambage, 26, set a new WNBA record for points in a single-game as she threw down 53 for the Dallas Wings against the New York Liberty on Tuesday evening.

Shooting 17-of-22 from the field, including 4-of-5 from the three-point-line – Cambage’s performance was crucial in securing the Wings a 104-87 victory.

She starred throughout the clash, even outscoring the Liberty in the fourth term to notch the highest individual tally by an Australian in the NBA or WNBA.

That wasn’t all for Cambage on Tuesday night though after she was selected as a WNBA All-Star for the second time in her career and the first time since 2011.

Starring for the Dallas Wings, Cambage has been a revelation this season since returning to the WNBA after a five-year absence.

Being named an All-Star is a tremendous achievement for the talented centre who only 12 months ago was questioning her commitment to the sport of basketball.

“I took 2017 off, got right mentally and physically,” Cambage said last year. “I was in a really bad place with my basketball, I was in a bad place personally with my mental health… I needed to step back and get right, focus on me again and I did that.”

Through 21 games this season, Cambage has re-established herself as a dominant force in the best women’s basketball league in the world.

Averaging 19.9 points, best for seventh in the league, 9.1 rebounds, second in the WNBA, and 1.7 blocks a contest.

Cambage has powered the Wings to a 12-9 record, currently sitting in fourth place in the toughs Western Conference.

Showcasing the skills she worked on and perfected while playing for the Melbourne Boomers over summer in the WNBL against some of the best basketballers in Australia.

Cambage has once again earned her spot amongst the WNBA’s elite players as the WNBA All-Star game is set to tip off on Saturday 28 July (Sunday 29 July Australian time) in Minnesota.

The actual teams that will face off against one another won’t be the two conferences, but rather will be selected under a new format.

Under the revamped format, two captains will draft the 2018 All-Star teams from a pool of players voted as All-Stars.

The captains will be Minnesota Lynx playmaker Maya Moore and Washington Mystics star Elena Delle Donne.
