LIZ CAMBAGE RETURNS TO CHEMIST WAREHOUSE WNBL
The three-time WNBA All-Star centre missed the current WNBA season with the Las Vegas Aces due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will return to playing in Australia for the first time in three years.
“I am really looking forward to playing for the Flyers in the WNBL this season. I know they had a great first year and I am keen to help the team go one better and win the Championship,” Cambage said when confirming her decision to join Southside Flyers.
“It will be great playing with a number of Opals teammates and of course our coach, Cheryl Chambers, who is an assistant coach with the Opals. Flyers captain Jenna O’Hea is one of my favourites, she is also the Opals captain, she is like my captain on and off the court,” Cambage added.
For Flyers coach Cheryl Chambers the addition of Cambage to the line-up is very exciting.
“Liz is a superstar of women’s basketball and we know what she will bring to the team on the court which is really exciting for us. She has a great attitude and will be great for the team, not only on the court, but also off the court and in the community. Her profile will be great for the Flyers and the WNBL,” Chambers said.
Returning to train at Dandenong will complete a full circle for Cambage who played her junior basketball at Dandenong before taking to the world stage. Her professional career started with the Dandenong Rangers in the WNBL in 2007 and has included six seasons in the WNBL, seasons in China and the WNBA. She has been an All-Star in every competition she has played since 2010.
Basketball Australia Head of Women in Basketball, Lauren Jackson AO, said the signing of Cambage for the forthcoming Chemist Warehouse WNBL season was a further boost for league, with the All-Star centre joining a long list of current Australian Opals turning out in season 2020-21.
“We are thrilled to welcome Liz back to the Chemist Warehouse WNBL. Liz is without question one of the world’s best basketballers and will be a draw card for the league both on and off the court.
“You look at the rosters of the eight WNBL clubs for the forthcoming season and they are chockfull of the best emerging and established Australian athletes, not only wanting to claim the WNBL title but selection in the Opals team for the Tokyo Olympics.
“The WNBL is the longest-running elite women’s sporting competition in Australia and renowned as one of the leading women’s basketball leagues in the world, and fans will see just why when the new season tips off,” concluded Jackson.
Cambage will join several of her teammates for some unofficial training, under strict COVID-19 protocols, at the Dandenong Stadium this week before official training commences in September.
“While the coronavirus interrupted my WNBA career, it has given me the opportunity to play in Australia. I have always enjoyed playing in the WNBL, it is one of the best competitions in the world and I hope to see more supporters get behind the Flyers this season,” Cambage said.
The Chemist Warehouse 2020-21 WNBL season signifies the start of an exciting two years for Australian women’s basketball with the delayed Tokyo Olympics scheduled for July 2021 and Sydney will host the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in late 2022.
