Basketball in Australia Unites to Raise Funds for the Australian Bushfire Disaster
The Australian basketball community has been participating in various fundraising initiatives over recent weeks and will continue to raise further funds as these initiatives extend into the coming period.
Jerril Rechter, CEO of Basketball Australia said: “We send our thoughts and sympathies to all those impacted by the devastating bushfires that continue to burn across the country.
“The funds raised from these various initiatives throughout the Australian basketball community will go to those affected including the incredibly selfless firefighters, volunteers and organisations who have been on the frontline of the bushfires, protecting Australian communities and wildlife.
“We will continue to show support in any way we can during this difficult time for our country and its people.”
The WNBL, its clubs, players, referees and fans have raised thousands through the #IpledgeWNBL initiative that was launched on the WNBL Show last week. The #IpledgeWNBL funds go directly to the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery.
Belinda Dimovski, Head of Engagement and Support at Australian Red Cross said: “The size and scale of these fires in many parts of Australia is unprecedented. But so is the incredible wave of support we’ve seen from people and businesses around the country and overseas.
“The funds raised will ensure our trained staff and volunteers can continue to be there for the long-haul, helping people take a deep breath, take stock of their losses, and slowly but surely get back on their feet.
“We’d like to thank Basketball Australia and all of their players and supporters for leading these incredible initiatives and showing such generosity to our emergency teams and the people we help.”

Other fundraising campaigns currently taking place include memorabilia auctions from the Melbourne Boomers and Basketball Victoria, the NBL’s stat-specific pledges ($300 per 3-pointer), donations from WNBL, WNBA, NBL and NBA players and local initiatives such as charity games and tin collections.
Basketball Australia and its partnering leagues and communities stand in solidarity with all those affected and will continue to find ways to support this worthy cause.
