2021 Victorian State Team Coaches and Staff Announced
Basketball Victoria has selected an array of new and familiar coaches to the head coaching positions in 2021, greatly highlighting the coaching depth we have across the state.
Returning to the Victorian coaching line-up is legendary three-time Olympic coach and NBL champion coach Brendan Joyce who will coach our Victoria Under-20 Men at the 2021 Australian Junior Championships in Canberra.
Our Victoria Metropolitan head coaching ranks will feature three new coaches in 2021 as well as one coach set to make his Australian Junior Championships debut.
Following on from a successful journey as assistant coaches, Lloyd Klaman will be the Under-18 Metro Women head coach while Jack Fleming and Jacqui O’Neill will lead our Under-16 Metropolitan Men and Women respectively. Craig Stratford (Under-18 Metro Men) will resume his role from 2020’s cancelled Australian Under-18 Junior Championships in 2021 and get his first opportunity to head coach in the national arena.
Haydn Kirkwood (Under-18 Country Women) and Josh Waight (Under-16 Country Men) will lead the Country teams for the first time in their coaching careers after successful stints as assistant coaches.
Also returning to the head coaching roles for another year include national championship winning coaches Hannah Lowe (Victoria Under-20 Women) and Simon Robinson (Ivor Burge Women), Ivor Burge Men’s head coach Ryan Holloway, Kevin Coombs Cup head coach Ben Hodgens as well as Victoria Country head coaches Mat Holmes (Under-16 Women) and Joel Anderson (Under-18 Men).
Two of Basketball Victoria’s High Performance Head Coaches, Jenni Screen (Victoria Navy Blue Under-20 Women) and Ash Arnott (Victoria Navy Blue Under-20 Men), will also be head coaches in our State Team Program, coaching our Under-20 Navy Blue teams at the championships.
Basketball Operations General Manager Grant Wallace said the strength of the candidates in Victoria continues to make State Team Coaching Staff nominations extremely difficult to choose from.
“We were thoroughly impressed with the calibre of coaches who nominated for our 2021 State Team Program and appreciate those who applied for positions,” Wallace said. “The group of coaches and staff we have selected will guide Victoria’s best junior players into the 2021 Australian Junior Championships and gain valuable coaching experience at these events.
“While our coaches, staff and players weren’t able to go to the Under-18, Kevin Coombs Cup and Under-16 Championships this year, we expect to see Victorians excel once more in 2021 with this elite group of coaches guiding them all the way.
“We would also like to send a special thanks those players, coaches and staff members who were part of our 2020 State Teams.
“Your achievements are incredible and even though some of you weren’t able to attend your national championship, Basketball Victoria wants to congratulate you for being an important part of our Victorian state team history.”
With only the one championship event held in 2020, Victorian teams excelled in their limited opportunities with our Under-20 Women, Under-20 Men and Ivor Burge Women winning gold in Canberra this February while the Ivor Burge Men were exceptional in winning silver at the solitary national championship event.
Basketball Victoria sends 15 state teams to Australian Junior Championships each year, with participants from both Metropolitan and Country areas featuring in teams including our Ivor Burge (athletes with an intellectual disability), Kevin Coombs Cup (wheelchair basketball), Under-16, Under-18 and Under-20 teams.
