Held in Townsville between April 13-20, the tournament will provide a significant boost to the community and city’s economy following the devastation of floods in February.

Many of Australia’s future stars have been discovered at the Under-18 Championships and it is an important step in the pathway to national representation with the likes of Ben Simmons, Matthew Dellavedova and Liz Cambage having participated in previous years.

The Kevin Coombs Cup presents the only opportunity for junior wheelchair basketballers to represent their state in a national Championship and this year will feature several players vying for selection at the Under-25 women’s World Championships in May.

The Under-18 women are split into two groups with Pool A featuring Vic Metro who are aiming to win their fifth title in six years while last year’s silver medallists (SA Metro) and bronze medallists (Vic Country) headline Pool B.

Hosts Qld North will tip off proceedings on the morning of Day 1 when they take on ACT.

Every state and territory is represented in the Under-18 men’s competition, which is also split into two groups.

WA Metro, who broke an 18-year drought last year, will begin their Championship defence against SA Metro while Qld South will be keen to go one step further after falling to WA Metro in the 2018 gold medal game.

Vic Metro will also be desperate for redemption after they won bronze last year following four Championships from the previous five years.

Group games for the Under-18’s run from Saturday, April 13 to Wednesday, April 17 before finals begin on Thursday, April 18.

The women’s gold medal game will be held at 5pm on Saturday, April 20 with the men’s gold medal game scheduled for 7pm.

The Kevin Coombs Cup begins on Wednesday with six teams vying for this year’s Championship.

Victoria are aiming to become the first team to go back-to-back since 2015 after they won their first title last year but they will need to get past two Queensland teams that will be keen for success in front of home crowds while a composite Queensland/South Australia side will also compete.

Kevin Coombs Cup group stage games run through to the final day of the tournament before the bronze medal game is played at 1pm and the gold medal game at 3pm.
