2018 AUSTRALIAN SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY 1 RECAP

The opening day saw 114 games played across the three venues and Lake Ginninderra, powered by Tristan Scotcher (26 points) and Deng Diing (20 points), proved they mean business with a massive 32-point victory over Sydney Boys High School in their first clash of the Championship Men’s Division.

Rowville Secondary College claimed a thrilling two-point victory over St. James College as Luke Rosendale hit six three-pointers on his way to 30 points while St. Kevin’s College also claimed a narrow six-point win and Willetton flexed their muscle with a comprehensive performance over Newington.

The Championship Women’s division kicked off with Immanuel College getting the better of Lake Ginninderra behind Gabriella Vidmar (24 points) who proved too much for the combination of Mikala Williams (22 points) and Kobe Hawea (17 points).

Westfields then secured a nail-biter by three points thanks to Tatiana Beaumont’s 24 points to announce themselves on the tournament.

Across in the Under-20 Division 1 Men, Yarra Valley recorded a massive come from behind victory as they won by ten points after being down as much as 12 in the fourth quarter. James Roche was essential in the comeback, scoring 18 points in the fourth term and a massive 36 points overall.

Rounding out the day’s game was a classic double-overtime in the Under-20 Division 2 Women with Willetton Senior eventually defeating Central Coast by 7 points. Sophie Vuleta top-scored for Willetton with a huge 23 points, helped along by Lily Fitzgerald (15 points) and Jade Steenkamp (10 points).
