Warwick Senators to host 2020/21 Australian Under-16 Championships

Warwick Stadium last played host to these championships in 2017 to tremendous accolades and are excited at the prospect to once again showcase Perth and the wider Western Australian region.

The Under-16 Championships sees teams from across the country come together to compete for the Australian title. It provides the first true opportunity for junior Australian athletes to represent their state and are a vital aspect of the pathway towards national representation.

Warwick Stadium’s CEO Josh Nipps said they were excited to once again host the 2020 and 2021 Australian Junior Championships.

“In 2017, the local basketball community got behind WA and this is going to once again be a great opportunity to be involved in such a magnificent event” he said.

Basketball Australia’ Executive General Manager Basketball, Paul Maley, said that Basketball Australia is equally thrilled to have the Under-16 championships returning to Warwick Stadium.

“Warwick Senators Basketball Club (formerly Stirling Senators) did an outstanding job hosting the event in 2017 and we know they will only build on that for 2020/21. Their stadium and facilities are up there with the best in country which is vital for our emerging junior athletes”, Mr Maley said.

Head Coach of the Warwick Senators and Perth Wildcats legend, Mike Ellis added that its always an honour to host the best teams and players from across the country.

“Our club, our city and our state are amazing. This is a great opportunity for all to be showcased” he said.

In addition to a great display of athleticism, the local community will have the added benefit of a major boost to local tourism.

“The Australian Junior Championships have been estimated to bring up to 15,000 bed nights and $4million in spending to a local area across the course of the tournament” stated Paul Maley.

“The Warwick Senators club, the City of Joondalup, and local businesses have been & will be continue to be instrumental in making this event the best ever Australian Junior Championship” added Josh Nipps.
