VALE MAX BRISBANE OAM

Max Brisbane was one of the dominant and pre-eminent basketball administrators in Australia for four decades.

Max led Victorian Country basketball from the very beginning with names such as Jack Terrill (Geelong), Colin Wale (Traralgon), Ken Holt (Swan Hill) and Colin James (Albury).

Basketball had been happening across country Victoria for some time, however a meeting on Sunday 28 May 1967 formed what we now know as Basketball Victoria Country and Max was the elected the first secretary.

43 years later in 2010, Max retired from the organisation and left a legacy that future generations will only benefit from.

Max was a former Basketball Victoria president, was awarded Life Membership to Basketball Victoria in 1988 and received the very first Jack Terrill Medal in 1973.

One of Max’s legacy’s will be his provision and development of competitions which includes BVC Country Champs and the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup.

On the 20th May 1986, John Martin and Rex Nottage (Basketball New South Wales) Ted Powell (South Australia Country Basketball) and Max met in Melbourne to discuss how best to conduct a Tournament for the Champion Senior Men’s and Women’s Country teams from each state.

After a while it became obvious that the direction was wrong and a Competition for the best Junior Teams from each of the Country entities was slowly devised. The competition was to be called the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup and this January celebrated 33 years of successful operation.

Max was awarded Life Membership to the “Cup” in 2013.

In addition, Max served as Secretary of SEABL, was on the SEABL committee for several years and was General Manager of the Bendigo Braves while also being credited with coining the name ‘Braves’.
