SOBEY SET FOR BOOMERS DEBUT IN FRONT OF ADELAIDE FAITHFUL

The road to the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China begins on November 24 when the Boomers take on Chinese Taipei before they return home to host Japan in Adelaide on November 27 to complete the first window of the qualifiers.

Sobey was named in the Boomers’ squad ahead of the FIBA Asia Cup but groin issues kept him out of the selection camp in late July.

However, he has recovered in time to play all ten games for the Adelaide 36ers during this 2017/18 NBL season and is feeling confident ahead of his first international game in the green and gold.

“I’m all good now,” Sobey said.

“I’ve been playing for the 36ers and now I’m just hoping the injuries stay away and I can keep working on my game.

“This will be my first time under Andrej’s wing so I’m excited.”

The two games against Chinese Taipei and Japan will mark the end of a whirlwind 2017 for Sobey as it started with winning the NBL’s Most Improved Player award back in February.

Averaging 15.5 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal per game, Sobey was also named in the All-NBL Second Team and those performances helped him earn a spot with the Utah Jazz during the NBA Summer League.

His groin soreness hampered Sobey from making a true impression on the NBA but scouts will no doubt be keeping an eye on him when he makes his debut for the Boomers this weekend.

“I got told about three weeks ago that I’d be playing for the Boomers and I was a bit surprised but it was a great feeling,” he said.

“It is a dream come true and it’s an awesome achievement to play in the green and gold. I just can’t wait to actually put the colours on.”

Sobey will be in familiar territory for the second game of Australia’s first window, playing on his home court in Adelaide alongside team mates Mitch Creek and Matt Hodgson and he is expecting a rabid fan base on Monday night.

“The Adelaide fans love their basketball, they’ll get into it.

“There are three of us from the 36ers but the whole team has played at Titanium Security Arena in the past so we should have all the home court edge against Japan.”
