Slam dunk for Altona Sports Centre
Member for Altona Jill Hennessy today announced the Altona Sports Centre is a step closer to an expansion thanks to the Labor Government’sBetter Indoor Stadiums Fund.
The centre is home to the Altona Netball Association and Altona Basketball Association which have a combined membership of more than 6,000 people.
However, the facility has been at peak capacity for several years, forcing more than 70 byes a week because there are no courts available.
As part of the planned major expansion, four new indoor courts will be added along with a grandstand seating 1000 and two competition standard outside courts with competition lighting.
In addition to new courts, change facilities and public amenities will be upgraded to make them female friendly and accessible, public areas, community rooms and administration areas will be modernised and developed, and an additional car park built.
The changes will increase participation by more than 30 per cent and enable more use by schools and the local community. The new outside courts with lighting will also allow futsal matches to be played at the centre.
This funding package is part of the Labor Government’s strong commitment to sports and active recreation and encouraging all Victorians to get out there and get active.
Across Victoria we’ve invested more than $420 million in community sport and recreation facilities, and earlier this year provided almost half a billion dollars in the Victorian Budget 2018/19 to support sport and active recreation at all levels.
Ms Hennessy acknowledged Hobsons Bay City Council and Altona Sports Centre Limited for their commitment and financial contribution to the expansion.
“This planned expansion of the Altona Sports Centre means no more frustration for local netballers and basketballers – there’ll be plenty of court space for the whole community to play the sports they love,” Member for Altona Jill Hennessy said. “We’re investing $3 million so more people in Altona and surrounds can enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle.”
