Rollers rebound with strong performance against Japan

After lamenting his squads intensity against Iran, head coach, Craig Friday was thrilled with the groups ability to respond less than 24 hours later.

“We were a much better team today,” Friday said postgame.

“Turned up and played to an acceptable level. Good contributions across the board.”

Erasing the previous nights slow start from their memory, the Rollers held a 21-16 edge after one, and were able to extend that advantage to 35-29 at the half, setting up the impressive win.

Producing an even spread offensively, the Rollers had four players in double-digits, led by Tom O’Neill-Thorne with 17 points.

The Rollers began the fourth quarter possessing a potentially dangerous 53-45 lead, but any thoughts of the home team gaining momentum were quickly eradicated, with a blistering 24-15 final period keeping the game well and truly in hand, with one particular Roller standing out to the head coach.

“Special mention to CJ McCarthy-Grogan on his impact in the 4th quarter,” Friday said.

McCarthy-Grogan finished with 13 points, while Shaun Norris had 12, and Brett Stibners 10.

Such is the nature of the Mitsubishi Electric Cup, the Rollers will once again have a quick turnaround, set to face Korea on Saturday, a challenge that Friday is eagerly awaiting.

“Our focus now shifts to Korea and another opportunity to test our philosophy and attitude.”
