RECORD NUMBER OF TEAMS SET TO COMPETE AT THE 2018 AUSTRALIAN SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS

With registrations now closed, 176 teams have confirmed their participation which is up from the previous record of 154 two years ago- close to a 15% increase.

The School Champs are open to all Australian and international secondary schools and bring together athletes to compete across Under-20, Under-17 and Under-15 divisions.

The best schools in the country also compete in the Championship Division which features the top teams from each state qualifying tournament and has included household names such as Dante Exum, Patty Mills, Mitch Creek and Tessa Lavey in the past.

Due to the outstanding performances of a number of teams around the country, the Champ Division will include ten men’s teams this year.

However, without Box Hill Senior Secondary College, the competition is wide open for 2017 silver medallists Lake Ginninderra and last year’s bronze medallists Willetton Senior High School to move up the podium.

There is a similar situation in the women’s Championship Division with eight women’s teams going head-to-head but without Queensland Champion and last year’s gold medallists St. Margaret Mary’s in attendance, teams like Lake Ginninderra or Rowville Secondary College will back themselves to claim the gold.

Overall, six schools will also make their debut at the 2018 Australian School Championships while Rotorua Girls High will represent New Zealand as the international team.
