ONE MILLION AUSTRALIANS ARE BASKETBALLERS

Ranked in the top 10 overall participation sports and physical activities with 1,017,968 participants, Basketball is also the second-most popular organised team sport behind football.

The AusPlay survey is Australia’s largest and most comprehensive sport and physical activity survey and has been conducted by Sport Australia since 2015. Its aim is to provide accurate and reliable information regarding physical activity amongst Australian residents.

The survey revealed 3.5 per cent of the Australian population aged 15 years and over are engaged in the game.

In other highlights from the survey:

• Basketball has the highest percentage of participation for adults of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults compared to the overall population – 5.6 percent compared to 3.5 percent.

• Basketball is ranked ninth in top 20 participation and physical activities behind activities such as walking, fitness/gym, swimming, running and cycling.

• 310,461 Basketball participants are female

• The majority of Basketball participants are aged between 12 and 18

Basketball Australia chief executive Jerril Rechter said basketball continues to be the game of choice for more than one million Australians.

“Basketball is one of the most popular team sports in Australia for both men and women,” she said.

“Basketball proves to be truly a national sport that is played in high numbers in every state and territory. It’s also a game that can be played anywhere as the percentage of players in cities and remote locations are almost exactly the same.”

“Pleasingly, at a time when Sport Australia is encouraging all to be more active, the research tells us the majority of our participants are motivated to play the game by fun, enjoyment and social reasons.”
