MICHAEL HAYNES APPOINTED HEAD OF OFFICIALS
Among the Head of Officials duties, Haynes will ensure the success of referee training and development programs throughout Australia, work closely with state and territory referee managers, establish systems for officials within the 3×3 and wheelchair basketball landscape as well as creating a framework and pathway for technical officials.
“We were very excited to offer Michael this position and elated that he accepted the role,” said Basketball Australia Acting CEO, Paul Maley.
“Michael’s combination of skills and experience within the sport, officiating in particular, and his strength in program management makes him the ideal person to lead officiating in Australia.
“This is an important investment in the development of officials- one that will certainly benefit all referees in Australia and improve the increasing standard of officials in every league.”
The CEO of Basketball ACT since March 2017, Haynes has also undertaken a number of roles with FIBA in the past including positions as Executive Member of the World Association of Basketball Coaches (WABC), an accredited instructor and Technical Director.
In his time with the WABC, Haynes has written education resources for FIBA referee instructor programs and helped to develop ‘basketball knowledge’ for FIBA’s global referee curriculum.
In addition, Haynes also served as the Chief Operating Officer of Basketball Australia from 2007-2012 and General Manager of Community Basketball between 2004-2012.
“I have been closely involved over the last five years with FIBA’s education programs and am really looking forward to this role,” said Haynes.
“Australia has a long history of producing high quality officials and we need to ensure our pathways respond to the massive changes that have occurred in the competition frameworks internationally.
“It’s important to recognise the good work being done by the states in attracting and developing referees.
“I’m excited to build upon this work and continue to improve the education and pathways so that Australia remains highly regarded on the world stage.”
The Head of Officials will work in conjunction with the current Referee Program Manager.
