GEMS NARROW SQUAD FOR 2019 FIBA U19 WORLD CUP SELECTION CAMP

17 athletes will attend the camp and at the conclusion of the four days, the team will be selected for the FIBA Under-19 World Cup to be held in Bangkok, Thailand from July 20-28.

From this selection squad, nine players were involved in last year’s FIBA Asian Under-18 Championships where the Gems qualified for the Under-19 World Cup.

Miela Goodchild returns home after her freshman year with Duke University while Jazmin Shelley is coming off a Chemist Warehouse WNBL campaign where she was honoured with the Rookie of the Year award.

Shelley has been named alongside other past and present WNBL players including Alex Fowler, Chelsea D’Angelo, Isabelle Bourne and Shyla Heal who claimed the International Youth Player of the Year award at last week’s Basketball Australia Awards night.

Prior to the FIBA Under-19 World Cup, the Gems will enjoy a couple of international warm-up games before heading to Thailand where they enter the tournament as the third most successful country.

The Gems will be aiming to emulate the accomplishments of past teams that won gold in 1993, silver in 1997 and bronze medals in 1989, 2013 and most recently in 2015 with a team that included recent WNBA draftees Alanna Smith and Ezi Magbegor.

This year, Australia (ranked seventh in the world) will take on the USA (ranked first), Hungary (14th) and Korea (15th) in the group stage.

Every team then advances to the Round of 16 but from there, the tournament enters a knock-out stage through the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and into the medal games.
