Former CEO – Wayne Bird – Retires after 27 years of Service

Former Chief Executive Officer and the Project Manager of the State Basketball Centre expansion – Wayne Bird, has retired from Basketball Victoria after 27 years of service to the Victorian basketball community. 

Joining the team in 2002, Wayne lead the organisation for 11 years as CEO, although, Wayne’s relationship with Basketball Victoria started in the 1990’s when he was on the Board for 8 years looking after treasury 

As CEO, his major achievement was overseeing the construction and opening of the State Basketball Centre in 2012, and since then, has led the planning for the much-anticipated expansion. 

“Reflecting on the growth of the organisation, the creation and expansion of programs like Aussie Hoops and Inclusion were significant during my tenure. The relationships I’ve built in both government and associations have also been very important to me” Wayne said. 

Basketball Victoria President, Mike Bainbridge paid tribute to the legacy Wayne will leave for the community. “On behalf of the Basketball Victoria Board, Members and Staff I want to personally thank Wayne for all he has done for the Victorian basketball community. He is leaving a magnificent legacy, one that may never be surpassed. It’s rare that saying thank you is not enough. 

Wayne BirdNick Honey, Basketball Victoria CEO congratulated Wayne on his unwavering service and support given when the reins were handed over in 2013. “When I took over the CEO role from Wayne, we were in very good shape due to his outstanding custodianship for over 11 years. He then transitioned into the newly created position of Government Relations and Facilities Managerdriving much needed facility growth and delivering outstanding results.” 

I wish Wayne all the best in his well-deserved retirement and thank him for his service. As is typical of Wayne, he has made himself available to assist as we continue to plan for the stage 2 expansion of the State Basketball Centre. Thank you for your dedication and contribution to the sport over these many years.” Honey said. 

Past President of Basketball Victoria, Life-Member and long-time friend of Wayne’s – Dan Kirtley added to the accolades for Wayne’s dedication to the community. “I know I speak on behalf of all in the Victorian basketball community when I acknowledge and sincerely thank Wayne for his vast and invaluable contribution to our sport. His contributions as CEOGovernment Relations and Facilities Management cannot be underestimated. He has set a standard for everyone else to aspire to.” Kirtley said.
