The Under-16 Championships provide the first true opportunity for junior Australian athletes to represent their state and are a vital aspect of the pathway towards national representation.

This will be the first time that Darwin has hosted a state-based Australian Championship having previously hosted a number of Australian Under-14 Club Championships in past years.

This year’s tournament will utilise Darwin Basketball’s upgraded facilities and infrastructure along with the added drawcard of Darwin being a holiday destination for visiting families.

Vic Metro will begin their title defence for the Boys in Pool A and go up against six other teams including NSW Metro, who won back-to-back Under-16 Championships in 2013 and 2014.

Pool B consists of QLD North, who took home the Robert Young Trophy in two of the past four years, last year’s silver and bronze medalists in Vic Country and SA Country as well as home team Northern Territory.

Vic Metro are also the defending Champions in the women’s competition, having won the Norma Connolly Trophy in 16 of the past 18 years.

They will have to navigate the likes of QLD South, who won in 2015 and home state hosts Northern Territory in Pool A while Pool B will be a fierce battle between Vic Country, QLD North and NSW Metro who finished last year in second, third and fourth spot respectively.
