Day 4 Recap – 2019 Australian School Championships
Box Hill Senior Secondary College (VIC) proved an old lesson in a thrilling Championship Men’s semi-final against Trinity College – it’s only over once the final siren goes. It took an overtime, but in the end Box Hill emerged triumphant in the 96-87 epic at the State Basketball Centre.
A full house was on hand, including Australian Boomer Mitch Creek, to see the next generation of Australian schools basketball go to new levels. They were precariously placed throughout the clash, as Trinity College went on a tearaway 14-0 start and extended a 19-point lead early in the fourth term. Isaac Atuer (28 points, nine rebounds) and Kalani Sapwell (22 points) went on a scoring spree throughout the clash, but it was the cooler heads off Box Hill’s bench that sparked the revival.
Wena Okwera (21 points, 14 rebounds), Jordan Adams (14 points, six rebounds) and captain Harry Bowater (13 points) toiled to erase the margin… not once, but twice in an extraordinary game. Abraham Gatwech Chol (20 points, 11 rebounds) made some important baskets down the stretch – including a monster trey with 38 seconds left to lift the crowd. From there Box Hill carried its momentum through the overtime to record an all-time memorable victory in Australian School Championships’ history.
Box Hill is set to face Lake Ginninderra in the gold medal game following Lake G’s 100-59 win over Sydney Boys High School. In an emphatic performance, it was hard to go past the efforts of Ginninderra’s Blake Jones (26 points, 21 rebounds), Hunter Clarke (22 points, seven rebounds) and Dhal Fleg (21 points). Kobe Shannon (17 points) was Sydney Boys’ best.
Ignatius Park (QLD) picked up a 96-89 victory in its classification game against Westfields Sports Academy (NSW) as Boston Mazlin (36 points, six rebounds) continued his exceptional tournament for Ignatius alongside Rory Hawke (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Luca Yates (12 points, 11 rebounds). For Westfields, Ammaron Mccarthy (26 points) and Milos Djurovic (25 points) kept the scoreboard ticking.
Willetton (WA) rolled Saint Ignatius College Riverview (NSW) 89-77 in the other classification game.
In Championship Womens’ results, Lake Ginninderra booked its spot in the gold medal clash following its 88-60 victory over Willetton. Victorian tandem Agnes Emma-Nnopu (25 points, 13 rebounds) and Sara-Rose Smith (24 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists) continued to flourish at the Australian School Championships and guided the ACT school to a 5-1 record through the pool stage. For Willetton, Talicia Henderson (15 points) was a standout.
Needing a pair of wins on Thursday to advance to the gold medal clash, Box Hill started strongly in the morning with a 58-45 win over St Luke’s Grammar School (NSW) with Paige Price (16 points, seven rebounds) and Erin Riley (16 points, six rebounds) starring in the morning. Elles Van Der Maas (11 points, seven rebounds) was St Luke’s best.
In a thrilling final game of the Championship Women’s pool stage, Box Hill (VIC) and Immanuel College (SA) fought out a pseudo-final to see who would face Lake G in the finale.
It took an overtime to separate the sides, but in the end, Box Hill took out a thrilling 82-80 overtime triumph to book its spot in the gold medal game. Paige Price (16 points, 16 rebounds), Rhiannon Ockwell (15 points, nine rebounds) and Erin Riley (15 points) were superb for Box Hill while Amy Cotton (25 points, 18 rebounds) was sublime for Immanuel alongside Gabriella Vidmar (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Isabella Stratford (14 points, eight rebounds).
Hillcrest (QLD), battling for a spot in the gold medal match, made light work of Don College (TAS) 111-38 with Lily Rotunno (28 points) and Mikayla Frankland (22 points) putting up some strong numbers, while Shelby Rayner (13 points, 13 rebounds) continued her toiling week for Don College.
Hillcrest’s run was cut short by St Luke’s in a 70-71 epic. Elless Van Der Maas (24 points) starred again for St Luke’s while Shorna Preston (26 points, 17 rebounds) lit it up for Hillcrest.
Finishing off the Championship Division’s pool stage was Willetton defeating Don College 91-49 as Brooke Malone (17 points, seven rebounds) starred for the winners while Shelby Rayner (35 points) was the standout as per usual for Don College.
In the other divisions, Newington College and St Joseph’s College FTG booked their spots in the Under-20 Men’s Division 1 grand final. Newington saw off The Scots College in a 64-63 thriller as Fletcher Macdonald (16 points) and Samuel Clemens (14 points) led the charge while Scots’ Lucas Lamport (23 points) and Matthew Wacher (21 points) also excelled. St Joseph’s FTG defeated St Ignatius College Riverview 73-58 as Nathan Hare (19 points) and Seb Boyce (17 points) led from the front while St Ignatius was led by Jack Aman (27 points).
U20 Women Division 1 grand final will be St Paul’s Anglican Grammar vs Marsden State High School following a pair of impressive semi-final triumphs. St Paul’s proved too powerful for Aquinas through Dallas Loughridge (29 points) and Myah Healey (14 points). Marsden’s 68-45 victory over Willetton was driven by Maya Entrop (31 points) and Patryce Ikitau (22 points).
Marcellin and Hunter Sports High will battle it out in the Under-17 Division 1 Boys’ grand final following wins over Box Hill and Westfields Sports respectively.
Rowville will face Haileybury Girls in the Under-17 Division 1 decider following Haileybury’s 52-41 win over Creekers.
Berwick College and Rowville battled it out in the first semi-final in the Under-15 Boys, but in the end Berwick emerged triumphant 67-41 as Ethan Bolton (21 points) and Brian Vengsayi (15 points) led from the front. They’ll face Whitefriars that racked up an 82-49 win over Marcellin.
Rowville and Berwick will battle it out in the Under-15 Girls Division 1 grand final as well following big wins over Hillcrest and Cabra Dominican College respectively. Kaitlyn Scott (16 points) was brilliant for Rowvillle while Jessica Smith (20 points) led Berwick College to its semi-final triumph.
