Day 3 Recap – 2019 Australian School Championships
Immanuel College (SA) continued its rampaging start in the Championship Women’s Division, notching its fourth win in a row to sit atop at the half-way mark of the competition. Immanuel was sublime in its 81-54 win over Don College (TAS). Immanuel’s shared the success today as the likes of Sophie Miles (17 points, six rebounds), Chloe Harding (12 points, seven rebounds) and Molly Althouse (seven points, 11 rebounds) were given extra minutes to great effect. Even from restricted minutes captain Isabella Stratford (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Jordana Vidmar (12 points) still made their mark on the contest. Don College was led ably by Shelby Rayner (21 points, nine rebounds) and Mya Slatter (17 points, six rebounds).
Lake Ginninderra (ACT) vs Immanuel College turned out to be particularly decisive as Lake G took a 72-55 win. Taking her side to the victory, Agnes Emma-Nnopu (24 points, 29 rebounds) was a powerhouse in every way as she dominated both boards and forced Immanuel onto the backfoot. Her efforts alongside Maddison Wheatley (20 points, seven rebounds) set the stage for Lake G and dramatically augments the ladder heading into tomorrow’s final round of pool games. Isabella Stratford (18 points, seven rebounds) and Gabriella Vidmar (11 points, five rebounds) were the best of Immanuel’s scorers.
Box Hill notched an emphatic 77-44 win over Hillcrest (QLD) on the back of some incredible three-point shooting across the board. Hitting 16 treys, the barrage started with Paige Price (32 points), who shone across the court. From only 26 minutes, her impact was immense as she nailed 7-on-13 three pointers and caused just as much trouble in the key when she drove. Continuing to make Hillcrest question inside or outside defence, Erin Riley (19 points, six rebounds) similarly had a field day with five threes of her own. Shorna Preston (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Lily Rotunno (13 points, seven rebounds) battled it out for Hillcrest, but in the end Box Hill showed too much class across the court.
Box Hill ramped up the pressure dramatically on Don College in its 93-45 win. The rampage began with a 26-1 start to fourth term as Sibel Balcioglu (18 points) started dropping long-range bombs for fun. She nailed six three-pointers to highlight an even spread from the entire roster. Don College was led by Shelby Rayner (26 points).
St Luke’s Grammar School (NSW) got on the winners list for the first time this week with a 80-58 triumph over Willetton SHS (WA). Continuing to make her mark on this competition, Catriona Henderson (26 points, 14 rebounds) was flawless alongside Fliss Henderson (15 points, 10 rebounds) while Talicia Hansen (10 points, five rebounds) led the way for Willetton.
In the Championship Men, Lake Ginninderra continued its unbeaten streak by taking out a 68-63 thriller over Westfields (NSW) as Blake Jones (28 points, 17 rebounds) helped Lake G storm home. Isaiah Oste-Pinder (19 points, nine rebounds) and Tomas Ramos (18 points, nine rebounds) both flirted with a double-double in the defeat.
Trinity College (SA) shook off a slow start to take a 78-68 victory over Saint Ignatius College Riverview (NSW). Trinity came home with a wet sail as Kalani Sapwell (27 points, five rebounds) and Ayual Garang (14 points, 12 rebounds) took charge. For Saint Ignatius, Harry Ballhausen (19 points) ground it out for Trinity over 40 minutes alongside Archer Woodhill (15 points, nine rebounds) and Thomas Roche (12 points, four rebounds, eight assists).
Box Hill’s (VIC) unbeaten start to the Australian School Championships continued unabated as it racked up a 70-55 win over Sydney Boys High School (NSW). Sharing the success, captain Harry Bowater (23 points) had a field day off the bench while Wena Okwera (nine points, 13 rebounds) also had an excellent outing. Kwabena Brefo (22 points, nine rebounds) led the Sydney Boys alongside Adam Gordon (10 points, eight rebounds).
Ignatius Park College (QLD) made light work of Willetton SHS in a 92-68 victory. Ignatius was led by Boston Mazlin (33 points, four rebounds) – who starred from a full 40 minute performance – alongside Callaway Parker (24 points, five rebounds) and Luca Yates (13 points, 13 rebounds). Thomas Musumeci (17 points, 11 rebounds) was impressive off the bench alongside Tristan Jacques (16 points, 11 rebounds).
In the younger divisions, the Under-20 Men qualifying finals saw Newington College take a 58-32 win over The King’s School (NSW) as Angus Ole (13 points) and Ben Gill (11 points) led the charge while Kings was led by Ben Moult (20 points). St Joseph’s had thrilling win over Flinders College (VIC) 72-65. St Joseph’s 1-2 combo Josh Woodford (23 points) and Nathan Hare (23 points) combined to ratchet up the pressure, despites the best efforts of Kingsley Box (44 points) dropping a monster tally for Flinders College.
Under-20 Women Division 1/2 Pool B is being led by Willetton (WA) following a superb 57-20 victory over Mount Lilydale Mercy College (VIC). Emerson Taylor has been incredible for WIlletton this week and Wednesday was no exception as she guided the side home in tandem with Jorja Millington (10 points). Willetton looks likely to cross swords with St Paul’s Anglican Grammar (VIC) after the Under-20 Girls recorded their fifth win in a row, knocking over Erindale College (WA) 82-42. Dallas Loughridge (26 points) and Myah Healey (19 points) were elite once again for St Paul’s while Zali Waihape-Andrews (11 points) and Madelyn Mclachlan (10 points) led the Western Australians.
Under-17 Boys had its finals tip off with St Joseph’s College FTG (VIC) knocking over Bendigo South East (VIC) in a 68-60 thriller. Harry Johnson (27 points) excelled for St Joseph’s alongside Koby Bland (19 points) while Bendigo was led by Jett Vandenberg (24 points).
Under-17 Girls is led by Rowville at the moment with the Victorians taking a 64-16 win over St Joseph’s Regional College (NSW). Nyadiew Puoch (21 points) maintained her incredible form alongside Evelyn Curtis (13 points).
Under-15 Boys Division 1 Pool B is led by Marcellin (VIC) following a nailbiting 52-47 win over Newington College (NSW) with Emett Wise (25 points) starring in the triumph for Marcellin while Alec Peterson (12 points) was Newington’s finest.
Rowville (VIC) and Berwick (VIC) remain atop the Under-15 Girls Division 1 competition with 4-0 records. Berwick took a 70-43 win over Lowanna (VIC) with Breana Granger (15 points), Malena Edwards (13 points) and Meg Robertson (13 points) leading from the front while Lowanna was led by Libby Hunter (15 points). Rowville’s 81-25 win over Cabra (SA) was spurred on by Kaitlyn Scott (14 points) and Jessica-Belle Catheray-Harvey (12 points) while Cabra’s best were Alexandra Griscti and Mia Walker-Roberts (eight points each).
