DAVID BIWER APPOINTED NATIONAL 3X3 PATHWAY MANAGER

Biwer guided the Australian women’s team to bronze medals at the 2017 and 2018 FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup and led the Australian men to a gold medal at the tournament earlier this year.

One of the world’s fastest growing sports, 3×3 basketball will make its Olympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Games and will also be played at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Basketball Australia Chief Executive Anthony Moore said: “David brings tremendous experience to the role and reinforces the strategic importance of 3×3, the partnership with the NBL and the 3×3’s elevation to Olympic status.”

Biwer’s responsibilities will also include developing the talent within the 3x3Hustle, the national competition established in collaboration between Basketball Australia and the National Basketball League (NBL).

NBL Chief Operating Officer Andy Crook said: “David will help identify and steer elite players into 3×3 and further strengthen the 3x3Hustle as the sport continues to build in popularity here in Australia and globally.”

Biwer said: “I’m excited about the opportunity to help grow 3×3 basketball in Australia and take the sport to the next level. With the development of 3x3Hustle we’re seeing new players coming to the game and Australia will have its own team at the Tokyo Olympics.

“We want to develop a clear pathway for local players to play 3×3 whether they be NBL players or those who aspire to represent Australia on the world stage.

“Player identification is critical so we can identify those players with the right skill sets who can play 3×3 and strengthen the talent pool in the years to come.”

A former NBL player, Biwer will lead a series of National 3×3 Talent ID camps to be staged late September and October with dates and locations to be confirmed in the coming weeks by Basketball Australia and the NBL.

Basketball Australia has announced the appointment of David Biwer as National 3×3 Pathway Manager to develop both Australia’s national teams and the emerging talent in the 3x3Hustle.
