CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE WELCOMES NEW SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETES
The CoE program which his based at the Australia Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra, houses the best young basketball prospects from around Australia to live and train together in a high-performance environment with daily training under the leadership and assistance of elite coaches.
This year, the Men’s program will welcome two young 17-year-old athletes, Evan Kilminster from Newcastle (NSW) and Jaylin Galloway, who was born in Australia but relocated to the USA in early childhood.
Kilminster has represented NSW Country in two Australian Junior Championships, including Under-16s (2018) where he averaged 8.29 points per game (PPG) and 1.86 rebounds per game (RPG). Then in Under-18s (2019) Kilminster averaged 6.56 PPG and 1.89 RPG and helped lead his side to the Playoffs.
Whilst attending Hunter Sports High School he was also recognised as ‘Sportsperson of the Month’ in September 2019. Throughout his junior representative career with the Newcastle Hunters, Kilminster most recently played in 2020 with the Under-18, Division 1 team.
Currently completing his year 11 studies, Kilminster will continue his academics at Lake Ginninderra College in the ACT alongside his fellow CoE and NBA Global Academy (NBA GA) teammates.
Adam Caporn, the CoE Men’s Program Head Coach looks forward to what the young guard will bring to Canberra.
“Evan joins the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence from the Newcastle Hunters and Hunter Sports High. He is an exciting point guard with flair and creativity that make him a unique and exciting prospect.
“He has the ability to break the first line of the defence and has both very good vision and scoring ability. He will be working hard to improve his skill set and physical tools and is already settling well in Canberra” said Caporn.
Galloway has recently returned to Australia from residing in Marietta, Georgia in the USA since he was three years of age. Following the mandatory two-week quarantine in Sydney, Jaylin will now continue living on-site at the AIS residences with his new CoE and NBA GA Teammates in Canberra.
Attending Sprayberry High School in Marietta, Galloway has played for the school in their Basketball Varsity Team in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
First catching the attention of the CoE back in July 2019, Galloway played for The Skills Factory (TSF) against the NBA GA Team which included current CoE athletes, Taran Armstrong and Blake Jones at the NBA Academy Games in Atlanta. Now Galloway will join forces with his former opponents at daily training.
In addition to his own talent, Galloway also holds strong family ties to the elite basketball community in Australia, as his mother is a former Townsville Fire WNBL athlete and the 2001/2002 Townsville Fire MVP, Kylie Galloway.
Caporn looks forward to the offensive talent and determination that comes with Galloway joining the CoE.
“We are excited to have Jaylin join the program from Georgia in the USA. He is an exciting athlete and very good shooter that will be a great addition to our program” said Caporn.
“An Australian citizen that has been living in the USA, Jaylin’s desire to maximise his improvement over the next 12-months will see him join the CoE and set himself up for a long successful basketball career,” concluded Caporn.
