CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE INDUCTS NEW 2020 SCHOLARSHIP HOLDERS
Basketball Australia is proud to announce on behalf of the governing body’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) the most recent athletes to join the CoE and NBA Global Academy (NBA GA) programs at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra.
The CoE program houses the top basketball prospects from around the country, where athletes at the AIS live and attend daily training together in a high-performance setting under the leadership and support of elite coaches.
The latest graduate to the CoE Men’s program is 18-year-old David Okwera from Braybrook in Victoria, whilst the NBA GA will welcome 17-year-old Aimable ‘Aime’ Rutayisire from Blakeview, South Australia.
Okwera stands at 6’11 and has been competing with the Kilsyth Cobras Basketball Association throughout his junior career.
In February of this year, Okwera contested the Australian Under-20 Championships as part of Victoria’s second state team, where he averaged 12.2 points per game (PPG), 10 rebounds per game (RPG) and 3.3 assists per game (APG).
Following his standout performances at these Championships, Okwera was named in Fox Sports’ All-Star Five team for the tournament.
“We are very excited to have David join the Centre of Excellence. He is an elite talent that will be able to make great strides with the resources and opportunities here,” stated CoE Men’s Program Head Coach, Adam Caporn.
“He is a high-level basketball athlete that can impact the game in so many ways and will be working hard to continue developing his skills and body.”
Following a junior career with the North Adelaide Rockets, Rutayisire will join the NBA GA a program that serves as a global hub for the NBA’s top international male and female prospects.
Earlier this year, Rutayisire was selected in the South Australian Metro Under 18 Boys State Performance Program for 2020, a program that provides development for players at a state level.
Caporn praises Rutayisire’s superb basketball skills, demeanour and determination both on and beyond the court.
“Aime will bring an elite work ethic, intelligence and professionalism to the program that will enable him to maximise his potential. He is a versatile player with great vision and ability to impact the game at both ends.”
Both athletes will commence with their respective programs later this month, Okwera on 23 September 2020 and Rutayisire on 28 September 2020.
