BVC Jamboree to stay in Echuca until 2023

Campaspe Shire Council has approved a five-year funding agreement with Basketball Victoria Country to support the delivery and growth of annual the BVC Jamboree in Echuca.

The long term agreement has been initiated this year, with a $5000 contribution from council to support the 2019 event, held from Saturday 21 September to Tuesday 24 September at the Echuca Basketball Stadium.

Of the event’s 25-year history, it has been held in Echuca-Moama for the past 21 years in recognition of the area’s high-quality basketball facilities, geographic location, multitude of accommodation and activity options, and ongoing support of the Echuca Basketball Association.

Basketball Victoria Country General Manager David Huxtable announced the five-year agreement alongside Campaspe Shire Mayor Adrian Weston at the 2019 Jamboree Launch on Monday at the Shire offices.

“This is sensational news for Basketball Victoria Country and the Campaspe region, with the ability to develop long term planning around this event and to help solidify the relationship we have with the Campaspe Shire Council,” Huxtable said.

“BVC strongly believe in developing partnerships with Local Government and both Campaspe Shire Council and Murray River Council have been supporters of basketball in this area and this event.

The Jamboree is a basketball development program operated by BVC that focuses attention on the U12 athletes, young coaches and up-and-coming young referees.

The BVC Skills Days are conducted in nine regional centres and see nearly 1000 Under-12 athletes put through the skills program.

With more players, coaches and games, the event will provide additional opportunities for referees to expand on their knowledge and experience.

“BVC has again made a financial contribution to providing referee scholarships for this event and the referees will receive on and off court education from experienced Vic Country referee educators,” Huxtable said.

The event has a positive economic benefit to the Echuca-Moama area with all areas such as accommodation, catering, retails shops and tourist attractions receiving a significant boost.

The Echuca Basketball Association plays an important part in the Jamboree with association president Phil Candy sharing in the excitement.

“It’s really exciting for the Echuca Basketball Association and our community and we’re really thankful to the Campaspe Shire Council and Basketball Victoria working together as a trio to make this happen, ” Candy said.

“It gives us some surety around what we’ve been doing as an association and we will make sure this event is a pleasurable one to all.”

Last year the Jamboree was held in conjunction with a FIBA Mini Basketball Convention with international guests from FIBA’s Head Office, FIBA Oceania Office and Oceania Federations. 

This year Basketball Victoria Country again be hosting FIBA Oceania Federations at the Jamboree, with the plan to assist Oceania Federations replicate a jamboree in their home country.

2018 focused on discussion around a mini basketball concept, while this year will be about detailed planning on how to deliver a jamboree and what barriers need to be overcome.

All athletes, team staff, officials and BVC staff will be accommodated locally across the four-day event held from 21-24 September.
