Basketball Victoria statement: Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub

The Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub is an urgently needed piece of sporting infrastructure and the Hub’s omission from the Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s 2018/19 draft budget needs to be addressed.

As expressed by the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub working group, council has conducted an extensive public consultation for the Hub, funded by the Federal Government, which confirmed extensive support and the urgent need from community clubs and associations across the region. This latest public consultation (which followed up on the 2009 feasibility study) involved community groups representing over 5300 players with over 20,000 family members impacted by indoor court shortage in the region.

This is an infrastructure construction project that needs to be addressed and without inclusion of the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub within the draft budget, the project will continue to stall as the region is denied desperately needed infrastructure.

Basketball Victoria’s Facilities and Government Relations Manager Wayne Bird said it’s important to keep momentum going on the Hub project as the region is bursting at the seams for new courts and easing strain on current infrastructure.

“The Macedon Ranges region is in urgent need of new facilities,” Bird said. “There are only six courts available for use across the shire, meaning each of those courts has to cater for 7583 residents.

“This is on the higher side of Victorian court-to-resident ratios and the development of the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub would not only go a long way to slashing this deficit, but importantly provide for future growth.

“The Hub needs to be put back on the agenda within the Macedon Ranges Shire Council as any delay means further exacerbation of the existing deficit.

“Basketball Victoria wants to ensure the needs of the community and the council are met to ensure a prosperous future for the Macedon Ranges’ basketball community.”

Victorian basketball is currently facing shortfall within our sporting infrastructure and for this to be addressed, an additional 191 basketball courts have to be built by the end of 2022 and a further 79 courts by 2030.

Basketball Victoria will work with all involved parties to make sure the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub continues to gain momentum and head towards beginning its construction within the next twelve months.
