AUSTRALIAN UNDER-16 CHAMPS HEADING TO DARWIN FOR FIRST TIME EVER IN 2019

The Under-16 Championships provide the first true opportunity for junior Australian athletes to represent their state and are a vital aspect of the pathway towards national representation.

This will be the first time that Darwin has hosted a state-based Australian Championship having previously hosted a number of Australian Under-14 Club Championships in recent years.

“Basketball Australia is excited to be able to bring the Under-16’s to Northern Territory for the first time,” said Paul Maley, Basketball Australia General Manager, Competitions.

“The Darwin Basketball Association and Basketball NT are in a strong position to host this tournament, they have excellent facilities and infrastructure along with the added drawcard of being a fantastic destination for visiting families.”

Sarah Rummery, Darwin Basketball Association Chair, says she is honoured and excited to be hosting next year’s Championship.

“With the recent investments and improvements in our facility, new competition structure and community support, Darwin Basketball is well equipped and ready to offer a memorable and exciting Championship event,” Rummery said.

“The tournament will be an amazing opportunity for players, coaches and spectators to visit the North and for our local players, volunteers and supporters to be involved at a national level,” added Darwin Basketball Association Executive Officer, Kerri Savidge.

Earlier this year at the Under-16 Championships, Vic Metro completed the double with their boys claiming back-to-back titles while the girls earned their 16th Championship in the past 18 years.

Northern Territory will be looking forward to their home-court advantage as well as increased support from their home fans to help their performances next year.

The Hon. Minister Lauren Moss, Minister for Tourism and Culture, including Sport, welcomed the Australian Junior Championship to the Northern Territory and Basketball NT Chair, Anne Coleman was also delighted with the news.

“This is a great opportunity for the rest of Australian basketball to enjoy our facilities, hospitality, climate and basketball community,” Coleman said.

“It will also provide Northern Territory basketballers the chance to play in front of their family and friends, as well as provide the Territory Basketball Community the opportunity to see first-hand the level of talent that exists in this age group.”
