AUSTRALIA SPLITS RESULTS ON DAY 2 OF 2019 WORLD UNI GAMES

Emerging Opals

Against Canada, the Emerging Opals’ opponents drained two three-pointers in the opening minutes to assert thmselves quickly.

However, that would prove to be the only time Canada would lead as Australia responded with a 14-3 run and never looked back.

As was the case in their first match-up of the tournament against Finland, the Emerging Opals’ height and strength in the front court proved to be a deciding factor against Canada.

Lauren Scherf was a force in the paint while Keely Froling showcased her range with two three’s to give her side a double-digit edge at quarter-time.

Keely Froling continued to light it up in the second stanza, hitting her first four three-pointers of the game and scoring 16 points on 6-6 shooting overall by half-time.

Anneli Maley (ten points) and Scherf (16 points, five rebounds) then joined in on the act from downtown to double up Canada on the scoreboard, 42-21, at half-time.

The second half followed the same script with coach Shannon Seebohm able to rotate through his entire roster again with nine players hitting the scoreboard as Australia ran away with a convincing 85-51 win.

Ezi Magbegor notched a double-double of 16 points and ten rebounds, Maddi Rocci recorded nine points and seven assists while Keely Froling finished with 20 points on 7-8 shooting.

The Emerging Opals will now take on China on Friday night in a quick turnaround from today’s game. The winner of that clash will claim top spot in Group D before the Quarter-Finals begin late Sunday night.

Emerging Boomers

Unfortunately, the Emerging Boomers were not able to emulate the women’s performance as they could not recover from a slow start against Israel.

Hitting six of their first ten attempts, Israel moved out to a 14-6 lead and while Tanner Krebs got the scoreboard ticking over for Australia with eight first-half points, they were unable to get stops.

That enabled Israel to move in front by double-digits but a 9-2 run heading into half-time, sparked by Dejan Vasiljevic, gave the Aussies hope at the main break.

That glimmer was short-lived though as Israel replied to push the margin out to a game-high 20 points.

The Emerging Boomers did not give in, finishing another quarter strongly on the back of a 7-2 run thanks to newcomers Jonah Antonio, Isaac White and Kyrin Galloway but Israel were not going to be upset, eventually claiming a 92-64 win.

Taking on Mexico tomorrow night in a quick turnaround, the Emerging Boomers will play their opening two games of the 2019 World Uni Games in the space of 18 hours. Needing to finish in the top two of Group A, Australia must bounce back quickly against Mexico to keep their Quarter-Final hopes alive.
