3×3 Community Hustle –Come and Try Wheelchair Basketball Sessions

Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, wheelchair basketball superstar and member of the Aussie Rollers Team, Clarence McCarthy-Grogan (CJ), found himself on an early flight back to his hometown, Darwin, Northern Territory.  He was studying Public Health with a minor in Disability Studies at the University of Texas at Arlington and captained their wheelchair basketball side, Movin’ Mavs.

Whilst living overseas, CJ closely followed the progress of wheelchair basketball at his childhood sporting organisation, and on arriving in town, wasted no time in contacting them, determined to give back to the sport he loves.

The 3×3 Community Hustle and Move It Aus! campaign has provided a platform to organise come and try wheelchair basketball sessions across three weeks, for both adults and juniors. This is the first Basketball program to get up and running since the pandemic.

“It’s been great that we’ve gained a lot of interest in the wheelchair basketball sessions from a lot of people and schools as well. The main focus is that we’re promoting the wheelchair basketball at DBA. Still, at the same time, it’s also about raising awareness about people with disabilities and showing people that anything is possible as long as there are opportunities,” said CJ.

With week one of the 3×3 Community Hustle Wheelchair sessions proving to be a great start to the program, Darwin Basketball Association Executive Officer, Kerri Savidge said, “It was wonderful to see the smiles and enthusiasm from the participants. Some of these players were new to the sport; some were relishing in being back on the court after the COVID-19 enforced sports lockdown, and some were there to listen and be motivated by CJ. The session was action-packed, fun and informative, and it was fantastic to see it all coming together to commence our roadmap back into basketball.”
