Competition has tipped off in Darwin following yesterday morning’s opening ceremony and the SA Metro boys are off to a hot start in Pool A with consecutive wins on Day 1.

Vic Metro and Qld South also prevailed in their respective contests but Qld South had to fight until the final siren, eventually defeating ACT by just four points.

Trailing by as much as eight in the final quarter, Qld South went on a 13-2 run to edge in front and hold on for the win thanks to five players hitting double-figures including Mason Davis (17 points, ten rebounds) and Kobe McDowell-White (15 points, ten assists).

ACT will be disappointed to lose but confident heading into the rest of the week after Alex Toohey top-scored with 23 points and Bowyn Beatty added 11 points and ten rebounds.

WA Metro have set the pace for the girls in Pool A, dealing with NT in the opening game of the tournament before backing up with a seven-point win over NSW Country.

Ruby Vlahov averaged 21 points across the two games while Mia Jacobs was a handful at both ends of the floor with 18 points and four steals per contest.

Qld South and Vic Metro round out the other undefeated teams in Pool A for the girls.

WA Metro also sit on top of Pool B for the boys after a big win over the home team while that group’s closest game saw Qld North claw their way to an eight-point win over NSW Metro.

SA Country also flexed their muscle, taking care of the 2017 and 2018 silver medalists in Vic Country by 16 points as Charlie Wyatt led nine players on the scoreboard with 16 points himself.

Pool B for the girls saw NSW Metro, SA Metro and Qld North get on the winners list but the nail-biters for the Sunshine State continued as Qld North beat WA Country, 79-77.

They had to overcome a four-point deficit at three-quarter time and Paris Santacaterina came up clutch with a big field goal inside the last ten seconds to finish with nine points.

Lilly-May Walker was simply outstanding with 38 points, countering the best efforts of ACT’s Abbey Hall (23 points) and Leah York (11 points).

Competition tips off this morning at 11am local time today. Day 2 games include the SA Metro boys putting their winning streak on the line against Qld South at 5pm while two undefeated teams in Pool A for the girls in WA Metro and Qld South also meet at 7pm.
