2018 AUSTRALIAN UNDER-14 GIRLS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP- DAY 4

Setting the theme for the day, the morning session of day four at the 2018 Under-14 Girls Club Champs saw some closely contested games.

The Darwin Cyclones and Altona Gators played out a nine-point game with the Victorian side coming away with a victory.

The Townsville Flames were extinguished by the Eastern Mavericks in a two-point nail-biter with Olivia Bradley hitting the go-ahead basket to seal the win.

As the pool games came to a close the morning, the afternoon would begin the battle for a Semi-Final berth, with many of the teams’ eyes on a chance to play on the big stage in Shepparton.

Beginning the Quarter-Finals in an exciting way, the Stirling Senators were able to qualify for a place in the Shield Division Semi-Finals after knocking over Mandurah by six points, 48-42 in a game that saw a relatively even spread of scorers for the side from Western Australia. Raylee Mcdonald led the charge with 12 points, to bring her tournament average to 7.5 points.

Local association Shepparton went down to Coffs Harbour in a two-point thriller, with the Suns scoring 10 points in the last minute and a half to take the lead with the clock running out. Isla Juffermans dropped 25 points in the game, with nine of those coming in the last term, including the bucket to give her team the lead and eventual victory in their Shield Division Quarter-final.

A low scoring affair saw the Cairns Dolphins pip the Wodonga Wolves by one point, with the even scoring of the Dolphins on display with three equal top scorers, each with seven points.

In the end, the difference in the game was one make from beyond the arc, separating the team by one point in their back and forth contest.

Continuing the trend of tight contests in the Shield Division scores were level at 25 all between the Canberra Capitals and the Altona Gators with three minutes left on the clock.

The fundamentals of basketball came into play with Chelsea Randich hitting five free-throws down the stretch to close out the game for Altona, giving the Gators their third victory in the tournament and a place in the Shield Division Semi-Finals.

The Melbourne Tigers remain undefeated for the tournament however not without a hiccup for Ray Tomlinson’s team with the Dandenong Rangers pushing the powerhouse until halftime where they led by one point.

It wouldn’t take long for the Tigers to hit their stride, only allowing 16 more points while stacking on 48 points in the second half to come away with a 70-39 victory in their Championship Divison Quarter-Final.

Remaining undefeated, the Knox Raiders had a challenge on their hands in the form of the Eastern Mavericks who would go toe-to-toe through the entire game.

The Mavericks mounted a late charge, however Knox’s defensive presence able to hold off the fast-finishing side in the safe hands of team leader Jaida Reid, who finished with 16 points, including two from long range.

Washing over their competition, the Gold Coast Waves took the sting out of the Hill Hornets with a 22 point victory, hitting five from long range to end their night with a 68 – 46 victory.

In the battle of the Sabres, it was Sandringham who came out on top, defeating Sturt by 28 points.

Nine players were able to hit the scoreboard for Sandringham, as they took the lead from the start and didn’t look back.
